The cast and filmmakers of the Lionsgate blockbuster Michael reunited on Saturday for a special awards-season screening at the Directors Guild of America Theatre in Los Angeles. The event featured a standing-room-only crowd that provided a standing ovation for star Jaafar Jackson during a Q&A session.
How was Jaafar Jackson cast?
Executive producer Graham King revealed that the search for the leading man involved looking at more than 200 candidates. King eventually selected Jaafar Jackson after viewing clips of him singing on YouTube. During an initial lunch meeting, King noted that he could feel the spirit of Michael Jackson coming through the performer.
Although Jaafar initially told King, "I'm not an actor," he eventually agreed to take the role. Director Antoine Fuqua noted that while he was initially unsure of Jaafar's acting abilities, the performer's screen tests were so convincing they felt "eerie."
Challenges in the preparation process
Preparing for the role of Michael Jackson required intense physical and artistic discipline. The production highlights include:
- Jaafar spent two years studying archival videos and personal writings.
- He worked with choreographers Rich + Tone Talauega to master iconic routines.
- The film features recreations of famous performances, such as the "Bad" sequence.
King mentioned that after a month of rehearsals, choreographers expressed doubt regarding whether Jaafar could reach the necessary level. However, Jaafar eventually transformed his performance independently, which King described as "incredible."
What is next for the production?
The film has become a massive commercial success, surpassing $1 billion in worldwide theatrical revenue. This milestone has made it the highest-grossing release for Lionsgate.
Looking ahead, the creative team will be honored with a Musical Tribute at the 36th Annual Gotham Film Awards on November 30 in New York City. Additionally, Lionsgate is planning a sequel, with production potentially starting in late 2026 or early 2027.
