This policy explains what information Oktrackle collects when you read our site, how we use it, and the choices you have. You can read every story without an account, and we never ask for your name, email address or payment details.

What we collect

Visit statistics. When you open a page, our server records which page it was, when you opened it, the website that sent you here (its domain only, such as google.com), whether you are on a phone, tablet or computer, and your country, which our hosting provider works out from your IP address. To count how many different people visit, we also store a code made by scrambling your IP address and browser details with a secret key. That code changes every day at midnight New York time, so it cannot follow you from one day to the next. We never store your IP address itself.

If your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal, we do not record your visit in these statistics at all. Visits from search engine crawlers and other automated tools are not recorded either.

Google Analytics. We use Google Analytics to understand how readers use the site. It sets cookies in your browser and sends Google details of your visit, such as the pages you view, how long you stay, your device and browser, and an approximate location based on your IP address. Google handles this information under Google's Privacy Policy; this page explains how Google uses information from sites that use its services. Google Analytics runs whether or not your browser sends a Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control signal; see "Your choices" below to turn it off.

Advertising. Oktrackle may show ads to support the site. Ads may be served by Google, including through Google AdSense, and by other third-party vendors. These vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this site and to other websites. Google's use of advertising cookies lets it and its partners serve ads to you based on your visits to this site and/or other sites on the internet. The ad vendors receive information such as your IP address, browser and device details, the page you are reading and their own cookie identifiers; Google explains how it uses cookies in advertising. See "Your choices" below to opt out of personalized ads.

Fonts. Our pages load typefaces from Google Fonts, so your browser connects to Google's servers, which receive your IP address and browser details. Google says it does not use Google Fonts requests to build profiles of people or to target ads (Google Fonts privacy FAQ).

Hosting and security. Oktrackle runs on Cloudflare, which receives every request to the site, including your IP address, to deliver pages and protect the site from attacks and abuse. Cloudflare handles this information under Cloudflare's Privacy Policy.

Email. If you email us, we receive your email address, the name on your email account and whatever you write. Our email is hosted by Zoho.

What we do not do

  • We have no accounts, comments, newsletter or payments.
  • We do not sell your name, email address or any other personal information you give us. Ad vendors collect their own information through cookies, as described under "Advertising".
  • We do not ask for your location. The weather in our header shows the same cities to everyone.
  • Weather and market figures are fetched by our own server, so your browser does not contact those providers.

Cookies

Oktrackle itself does not set cookies for readers.

  • Google Analytics sets _ga and a second cookie whose name starts with _ga_. They tell visits apart so Google can count returning readers, and they last up to two years.
  • Advertising: when ads are shown, Google and other ad vendors set cookies, such as __gads and __gpi on our domain and IDE on doubleclick.net, to show ads, limit how often you see the same ad, measure ads and, where allowed, personalize them.
  • Cloudflare may set short-lived security cookies, such as __cf_bm or cf_clearance, when it checks whether traffic comes from a person or an automated tool.

How we use information

  • To count readers and see which stories and topics people read, so we can decide what to cover.
  • To show ads that pay for the site.
  • To keep the site running, fast and secure.
  • To answer your messages and correct our stories.

We do not use this information to identify you, and we do not combine it with other information about you.

How long we keep it

We keep visit statistics so we can compare readership over time. They hold no IP address, and the visitor code changes daily, so they cannot be traced back to you. Google keeps Google Analytics data for the retention period set in our Analytics account and under Google's own policies. Ad vendors keep the information they collect under their own privacy policies. We keep emails for as long as we need them to answer you and to keep a record of corrections.

Your choices

  • You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. The site works without them.
  • You can stop Google Analytics on every site with Google's opt-out browser add-on, or by blocking cookies from google-analytics.com and googletagmanager.com.
  • You can opt out of personalized advertising from Google in Google's Ads Settings. You can opt out of personalized ads from many other vendors at aboutads.info, youradchoices.ca in Canada, or youronlinechoices.eu in Europe. You may still see ads that are not personalized.
  • Where the law requires it, including in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland, we ask for your consent before ad cookies are used, and you can change your choice at any time.
  • Turning on Do Not Track or Global Privacy Control in your browser keeps your visits out of our own statistics.

Your rights

You can ask us what personal information we hold about you, and ask us to correct or delete it, by emailing team@oktrackle.com. Our visit statistics contain no IP address or long-lived identifier, so we usually cannot find the records of a particular person's visits, but we can find and delete emails you have sent us.

Depending on where you live, including California and other US states, Canada, the European Union and the United Kingdom, the law may give you further rights over your personal information, including the right to opt out of targeted advertising; use the ad opt-outs under "Your choices" or email us. We answer requests within the time the law allows, and we will not treat you differently for using your rights. If you are in Canada and are not satisfied with our answer, you can contact the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Children

Oktrackle is a general news site and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal information, email team@oktrackle.com and we will delete it.

Where information is processed

Our database is hosted in North America. Cloudflare serves pages from data centers around the world, and our service providers, including Google and Zoho, may process information in the United States and other countries.

Changes to this policy

When we change this policy, we update the date at the top of this page. If we add an ad network or start collecting new kinds of information, we will update this page before that happens.
