Air Canada and United Airlines have announced six new transborder routes for the summer 2027 season. These flights are being launched under an expanded joint business agreement between the two carriers, which is currently awaiting approval from Canadian regulators.
What are the new transborder routes?
Air Canada will introduce three new seasonal services connecting Canadian cities to the United States. The planned routes include:
- Toronto to Louisville, starting April 28 with up to daily service.
- Montréal to Indianapolis, starting June 1 with daily flights.
- Edmonton to Newark, starting June 1 with four weekly flights.
United Airlines is also adding three seasonal routes. The carrier plans to connect Newark to St. John’s, Denver to Ottawa, and Denver to Québec City. Additionally, United intends to increase daily seats between Denver and Winnipeg by 65% and expand service between Washington Dulles and Québec City.
Expanding the joint business agreement
The two airlines have maintained a Transborder Joint Business Agreement since 2022, which has already led to the creation of 20 routes between the United States and Canada. The proposed expansion aims to include Canada–U.S. routes that were previously excluded from the arrangement.
If approved, the updated agreement will allow the carriers to more closely coordinate their pricing, schedules, marketing, and capacity. This coordination is intended to make travel between the two countries easier for passengers using the combined networks.
Other airline expansions
Beyond the transborder routes, other major carriers are adjusting their international schedules. Delta Air Lines will begin daily seasonal service between Boston and Reykjavík, Iceland, starting April 12, 2027. This route will utilize Boeing 757-200 aircraft and is expected to run through October.
American Airlines has also announced plans to open a new route from Miami to Barcelona, Venezuela, in January 2027. This service will operate three times weekly on Mondays. While some airlines are expanding, others are scaling back; Thai Lion Air and Hainan Airlines have both delayed the restart of previously suspended routes.
