A Guelph entrepreneur has developed a specialized chocolate bar designed to help women manage period pain. Jessica Ulbikas, the founder of BioSnactive Foods, created the Code Red brand to provide a natural, functional food alternative for menstrual discomfort.
How does the chocolate work?
The product uses bioactive ingredients to target common nutrient deficiencies. Ulbikas developed the formula during her master's studies in nutritional science after experiencing significant menstrual pain herself. The chocolate aims to support muscle function through specific additives:
- 150 mg of magnesium
- 300 mg of calcium
- 38 µg of vitamin D3
According to registered dietitian Emily Arthur, magnesium may help reduce discomfort by assisting with the relaxation of the uterus, which is a large muscle group. Research also suggests that calcium and vitamin D levels can influence the intensity of menstrual cramps.
The development of Code Red
The idea for the product originally stemmed from an undergraduate group project at the University of Guelph. Ulbikas noted that the group, which consisted entirely of women, all suffered from menstrual pain and observed that people often reach for chocolate during their periods.
Ulbikas spent an entire year hand-making the chocolate in the 10C commercial kitchen downtown before she was able to secure a manufacturer. She explained that the process required significant effort because "chocolate itself is such a finicky product to make."
The journey to BioSnactive Foods
Ulbikas eventually launched BioSnactive Foods Inc. with Code Red as its flagship product. She aimed to combine her love for dark chocolate with her scientific background to create something innovative. She noted that chocolate is already beneficial on its own because it contains antioxidants and polyphenols.
