Students and instructors gathered at 1751 Harvey Ave. on Saturday morning, Oct. 17, to celebrate the grand opening of the Kelowna Yoga Hub. The event marked the non-profit organization's transition to a new facility after 25 years of service to the local community.

A move to a more visible location

The Kelowna Yoga Hub originally launched in the early 2000s at a small house on St. Paul Street. That location was managed by the late founder Margaret Lunam until her passing in 2012.

Ruth Rochlin, President of the Yoga Hub Board of Directors, noted that the previous studio was run by volunteers for 24 years but remained difficult to find because it was tucked away. The new space offers several upgrades:

  • Two separate yoga studios
  • High ceilings and abundant natural light
  • A central location on the highway
  • Increased capacity for 32 classes per week

The benefits of yoga practice

Beyond the physical space, the organization emphasizes the mental health benefits of the practice. Rochlin shared her personal experience with the discipline, explaining that she used yoga to find necessary stillness in her life.

She noted that the practice requires students to clear their minds to perform the work. According to Rochlin, once that work is completed, the practice can help lift the heart and lower the mind, serving as a shelter from the stresses of everyday life.

Why the Kelowna Yoga Hub expanded

The expansion comes as yoga continues to grow in popularity. Rochlin stated that the move was the "culmination of years of tough decisions" aimed at finding a space that works for the community.

With the new facility, the organization aims to reach more newcomers and provide a welcoming environment. The studio is now open to the public through various options, including walk-ins and memberships. These memberships cover morning, daytime, and evening class schedules.
