Brazilian airline GOL will suspend several key routes to the United States starting February 1, 2027, as rising jet fuel prices force a network restructuring. At the same time, Air Canada has announced a new seasonal nonstop service connecting Montreal to Seville, Spain, scheduled to begin in late 2027.
Why is GOL suspending U.S. flights?
GOL is reducing its network due to the increasing cost of jet fuel, which the company says accounts for approximately 40% of its operating expenses. The airline will pause six routes involving Florida, including service from Brasília and Fortaleza to Orlando, and from Brasília and Belém to Miami.
Other international suspensions include:
- Flights to Montevideo, Uruguay
- Flights to Asunción, Paraguay
- Flights to Punta Cana, Dominican Republic
Additionally, the Rio de Janeiro to New York service, operated via a wet lease from Wamos Air, will pause on October 22 and is expected to resume in March 2027.
Air Canada expands to Seville
Air Canada will launch seasonal service between Montreal (YUL) and Seville (SVQ) on September 8, 2027. This will provide the Spanish city with its only nonstop link to North America. The airline plans to operate the route three times weekly, increasing to four flights per week in early October 2027.
The service will utilize the Airbus A321XLR, an aircraft configured with 14 Signature Class lie-flat seats and 168 economy seats. The airline noted the route "solidifies our position as the leading carrier by seat capacity between Canada and Spain."
Other global route changes
Several other carriers have announced upcoming schedule adjustments. Air India will begin four weekly nonstop flights from Delhi to Osaka, Japan, on February 2, 2027. ITA Airways is planning a new route between Rome and Caracas, Venezuela, starting March 30, 2027, using Airbus A330-900 aircraft. Meanwhile, Flair Airlines is set to add weekly service from Montreal to Puerto Vallarta in December 2026.
