Politicians from across the country traveled through Alberta on Friday to boost turnout and support for the Alberta to remain in Canada movement. The campaign reached a peak as leaders attempted to influence voters ahead of Monday’s referendum on provincial secession.
Unity amidst disagreement
Premier Danielle Smith and Prime Minister Mark Carney appeared together at a rally in Red Deer to endorse staying in Confederation. While the two leaders have frequently disagreed on public policy, they both support a proposed bitumen pipeline to the West Coast as a way to demonstrate that Canada can serve Alberta's interests.
“But today we can all agree that on Question 10, that we are voting for Option 1 to remain in Canada,” Smith told supporters.
Despite this appearance of unity, tensions remain regarding other items on the ballot. The Prime Minister recently urged Albertans to vote against nine other proposals concerning immigration and constitutional changes. Smith, however, maintained her stance on gaining more provincial control over immigration matters.
What is on the ballot?
The referendum includes 10 total questions for voters to consider. While the primary question concerns secession, the other nine proposals focus on increasing provincial autonomy. These include:
- Restricting certain newcomers' access to social services.
- Charging non-permanent residents for access to education and health services.
- Seeking a mandate for constitutional changes to gain power from Ottawa.
Smith argued that these measures would provide the province with necessary leverage within the country. Former Premier Ed Stelmach also joined the rally, having previously co-authored an op-ed calling for the rejection of the immigration questions.
